CHENNAI: Report on a Rs.1,400-crore combined water supply project, which will benefit the Vellore Municipal Corporation, six municipalities, five town panchayats and 64 rural habitations in Vellore district, is under preparation, Local Administration and Rural Development Minister M.K. Stalin told the Assembly on Friday. Responding to a call-attention motion, Mr. Stalin said the cost estimate, which had been worked out approximately, would be finalised by March. Once funding was tied up, the project would be taken up. It envisages tapping the Cauvery water near Thottilpatti village, downstream of the Mettur dam and upstream of the Chekkanur check dam. When C. Gnanasekaran (Congress) urged the Minister to include other areas in Vellore district in the project, Mr. Stalin replied in the affirmative. He also said that seven municipalities, including Vellore, Melvisharam, Arcot and Ranipet, 64 rural habitations and town panchayats such as Katpadi and Sembakkam formed part of the Vellore Municipal Corporation. In a statement placed in the House, Mr. Stalin said it would not be possible to include Thorapadi and Allapuram town panchayats in Vellore district under the Hogenakkal water supply project.
