Against stigma: Students taking out a ‘World Leprosy Eradication Day’ awareness rally in Tiruchi on Friday. TIRUCHI: A large number of students from various City colleges, health workers and doctors took out an awareness rally in the City on Friday to mark the World Leprosy Eradication Day. The rally, organised under the National Leprosy Eradication Programme (NLEP), was intended to sensitise the masses to the message that leprosy can be cured and those affected by the disease could be useful members of the society. It was also intended against the social stigma attached to leprosy, which often leads to loss of employment, social exclusion and emotional distress. Collector T. Soundiah, who flagged off the rally near the St. John’s Vestry Higher Secondary School campus, marched along with the students. The rally culminated near the K. A. P. Viswanatham Government Medical College. Students from Shrimathi Indira Gandhi College, Cauvery College for Women, National College, K. A. P. Viswanatham Government Medical College, NLEP field workers, nurses and nursing students participated in the rally. Corporation Commissioner T. T. Balsamy, the Joint Director of Health M. Poongothai, the Deputy Director of Health V. Veerapandian, Deputy Director (Tuberculosis) P. Abdul Samad, Deputy Director (Leprosy) P. Murugaiyan and others marched in the rally.
