Promoting entrepreneurship: S. Asokan, General Manager of the District Industries’ Centre, (seated second right) and J. James, President of the Tamil Nadu Association for Micro and Cottage Enterprises (seated right), at a sensitisation programme in the city recently. — COIMBATORE: In a move to sensitise micro and small entrepreneurs on various Central and State Government schemes and subsidies available, a meeting was held at the District Industries Centre (DIC) here on Tuesday. Members of the Tamil Nadu Association for Micro and Cottage Enterprises (TACT), and officials from the DIC and the National Small Industries Corporation (NSIC) participated. Officials explained various schemes. One-to-one sessions were also held and applications collected from eligible entrepreneurs. S. Asokan, General Manager of the DIC, told The Hindu that the State Government had allocated Rs. 1.7 crores under the MSME policy for Coimbatore District for 2008-2009. So far, 21 enterprises had availed themselves of Rs. 71 lakh subsidy. Micro enterprises in the district; micro, small and medium enterprises in backward blocks such as Annur or Pongalur and units that make special products were eligible for assistance under the State capital subsidy scheme. They would get 15 per cent of the cost of plant and machinery as subsidy. New industries should file the application within six months from the date of commencement of production and the existing units that expand should intimate the DIC within a month of expanding the capacity and file the application in six months. J. James, president of the TACT, said nearly 250 members of the association participated in the meeting and 150 submitted applications for the 15 per cent subsidy. The association would hold discussions with the DIC regarding one of the eligibility norms – enclosing five year rental agreement. Mr. James said most of the micro and small-scale units here functioned on rented premises. They entered into 11-month rental agreement with the property owner and hence many of them would not have a five-year agreement. The association would try to help these units too get the subsidy.
