Bangalore: Sports Authority of India (SAI) struck once in each half to begin its Super Division football league campaign on a winning note at the Football Stadium here on Saturday and at the receiving end was a luckless Southern Blues side which did everything else but score. The match between two mediocre teams was evenly contested and both teams came by chances but seemed to have kept its scoring shoes behind. However SAI was not to be denied for long as Christopher slammed home in the 39th minute. Switching ends, Southern Blues, which has survived in the Super division for the last couple of years, had a few good moves initiated by Santosh and Ashok but Cholan and Suji failed to convert the opportunities even after SAI went 2-0 up through Anwar Hussein goal in the 59th minute. SAI goalkeeper Manjunath too effected a couple of brilliant saves to keep his slate clean. In an ‘A’ division league tie played earlier, Students Union drubbed Reserve Bank 7-1 with Philip scoring the first hat-trick of the league. The wily striker scored in the 17th, 25th ad 41st minute after Avinash had opened the account in the 16th minute. John (44th), Surender (56th) and former ITI player Padmanabhan (81st) completed the tally for the winners. Vijay Kumar netted for the bankmen.
