Two trains to be flagged off today

Anil Radhakrishnan

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Though the Kochuveli-Dehradun weekly super fast express and the Kochuveli-Yesvantpur Garib Rath tri-weekly super fast express will be flagged off by Union Minister of State for Railways R. Velu on Sunday, the regular service of the two trains announced in last year’s railway budget will commence only later.

The 2258 Kochuveli-Yesvantpur Garib Rath Express, which will be flagged off by Dr. Velu at 4 p.m, will proceed from Thiruvananthapuram Central as a special train to Yesvantpur, railway sources said. The 2287 Kochuveli-Dehradun weekly super fast express, which will also be flagged off on Sunday, will run from the Central station only up to Kochuveli.

Railway sources said the 2258 Garib Rath super fast express to Yesvantpur and the 2287 super fast express to Dehradun will commence the regular service only later. Though the two super fast express trains are to run from Kochuveli, lack of basic facilities for handling the trains and passenger amenities has forced the railways to shift the flagging-off ceremony to the Central railway station.

Lack of bus connectivity is a major problem for commuters. Long-distance commuters travelling on trains bound to Kochuveli now alight at Kollam and board other trains to reach the State capital. The railway authorities said they had taken up the issue several times with the KSRTC management and top officials.

The railways have suggested operating buses linking Kochuveli to the Central bus station during the arrival and departure of long-distance trains.

The 2287 Kochuveli-Dehradun weekly super fast express will leave Kochuveli on Friday at 8.50 a.m. to reach Dehradun at 6.05 p.m. on the third day. In the return direction, the 2288 Dehradun-Kochuveli weekly super fast express will leave Dehradun on Monday at 7.20 a.m. to reach Kochuveli at 3.40 a.m. on the third day.

The 2258 Kochuveli-Yesvantpur Garib Rath super fast express will operate from Kochuveli on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

The train will leave at 8 p.m. to reach Yesvantpur at 11.30 a.m. the next day. In the return journey, the 2257 Yesvantpur-Kochuveli Garib Rath super fast express will operate from Yesvantpur on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. The train will leave Yesvantpur at 9 p.m. to reach Kochuveli at 12.40 p.m. the next day.
