Port, dock workers to go on strike for revised wages

Staff Reporter

VISAKHAPATNAM: The recognised federations in major port trusts and dock labour boards have decided to go on nationwide strike anytime on or after March 10 following failure of talks with the Indian Ports Association.

All India Port and Dock Workers’ Federation additional general secretary D.K. Sarma on Sunday said settlement had not been arrived at on their charter of demands even two years after constitution of bipartite wage negotiation committee. The port and dockworkers were unhappy with the ‘indifferent’ attitude of the port managements, Mr. Sarma stated.

The wage revision is pending for past two years. Threats to go on strike were dropped earlier following promises to consider their demands.

Unions’ contention

The federations contend that they tried a lot to avert going on strike and disputed the argument that the guidelines of Department of Personnel would not be applicable to major ports. As they were autonomous bodies under the provisions of Major Ports Act, they should not be treated as public sector undertakings.

Federation president S.R. Kulkarni said in Mumbai that the port and dockworkers were aware that recently the Government of India, while accepting the recommendations of the Sixth Pay Commission, had further liberalised the benefits of the employees of the Central Government.
