KADAPA: Implementation of Telugu as official language and medium of instruction was below expected levels and people were unable to shed the influence of English, INTACH district co-convener M. Janakiram said. Speaking at the International Mother Tongue Day meeting at Kalakshetram on Saturday, he said most educational institutions were giving importance to English medium of instruction and hence the government should accord priority to Telugu medium in schools. Mandatory subjectTelugu should be made a mandatory subject in English medium schools, he said. INTACH member N.C. Ramasubba Reddy said Telugu was not being implemented as official language properly and the government officials at the State and district-level should take special interest for promoting use of the language. Retired DGM of BSNL R.L. Narasimha Raju wanted wider use of Telugu in administrative correspondence. The craze for English should be reduced and use of Telugu and other native languages should grow, INTACH member N.N. Pratap said. Similar views were expressed by K. Narasimhulu, P. Subbarayudu, Kasturi Ramamohana Rao and T.S. Gowrisankar.
