This Day That Age
President Nasser, told a cheering crowd in Cairo on February 21, the eve of Union day, the first anniversary of the United Arab Republic, that he had received a letter from Mr. Nikita Khrushchev, the Soviet Prime Minister, assuring him of Soviet non-interference in the internal affairs of the United Arab Republic. He said: “We are not prepared to take orders from any foreign capital as it was in the past. Our policy emanates from our country, our soil and our conscience.” He said Mr. Khrushchev had expressed appreciation for Soviet economic aid despite the “ideological differences” between the two countries.
