Kallakkudi FC beats SRI, emerges TDFA champion

TIRUCHI: Kallakkudi FC emerged the Tiruchi District Football Association (TDFA) second division champion, beating Southern Railway Institute (SRI) 1-0 in the final, here on Sunday.

Kallakkudi played an attacking game from the start. Kalaiarasan’s strike early in the first half put Kallakkudi in the lead. Its players grew in confidence and initiated some threatening moves.

However, the scoreline remained the same at half-time. SRI players began the second session on a positive note. They repeatedly raided the rival defence and came close to scoring on a couple of occasions, but the equaliser eluded till the end.

Both the teams have been promoted to the TDFA first division.

Special awards: Best goalkeeper: Prasannabalaji (Kallakkudi FC).

Best player: Deepak (Rising Sun FC).

Sathyabama wins

Sathyabama University, with an all-win record at the end of the semifinal league, won the basketball title at the State-level inter-collegiate centenary tournament, organised by St. Joseph’s College on Sunday.

Jamal Mohammed, with two wins finished second, while PSG secured the third sport with a solitary triumph.

The results:

Semifinal league: Sathyabama bt Jamal 47-27.

Sathyabama bt PSG 68-53.

Jamal bt St. Joseph’s 66-32, Jamal bt PSG 45-44.

PSG bt St. Joseph’s 56-41.

Tarun triumphs

S. Tharun and S. Priyadarshini won the men’s and women’s titles respectively at the district-level ranking table tennis tournament, organised by the Kailasapuram Club, on Sunday.

The results (all finals): Men: S. Tharun (Campion AI HSS) bt P.K. Sukumaran (OFT) 11-9, 9-11, 12-10, 10-12, 11-9. Boys: Juniors: K. Thivakaran (RSK HSS) bt R. Muthuraman (Campion) 11-6, 11-9, 11-9; Sub-juniors: Shaheed Aslam (Campion) bt R. Muthuraman 11-6, 11-5, 11-8.

Women: S. Priyadarshini (Musiri Sports Centre) bt S. Bavithra (Savitri Vidyasala Hindu Girls’ HSS) 4-11, 11-7, 11-6, 3-11, 11-4. Girls: Sub-juniors: B. Deepa (SVS) bt S. Sushmitha (GHS, Thumbalam) 11-8, 6-11, 13-11, 11-4.

Open doubles: S. Kumaran & S. Hariharasudan bt P.K. Sukumaran & S. Tharun 6-11, 11-9, 12-10, 11-6.
