KOLKATA: Hours after External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee’s oblique reference to the Trinamool Congress while speaking about attempts to obstruct development in West Bengal, the leadership of the party hit back with a scathing attack on him. Without mentioning Mr. Mukherjee’s name, senior Trinamool Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Partha Chatterjee, described him as the “baggage-carrier” of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and West Bengal’s “hero” in its [the CPI-M’s] destruction of the State.” Mr. Chatterjee was critical of “the politics” behind the spate of foundation stone-laying ceremonies for development projects in the State ahead of the elections.
