River forum to continue protest

Staff Reporter

Thrissur: Chalakkudy River Protection Forum organised a public meeting at Kerala Sahitya Akademi Hall, here, on Monday in connection with the anniversary of their protest against the proposed Athirappilly hydroelectric project.

They would continue the strike, the forum activists said.

With this protest the forum wanted to create a platform for discussion among the public on conservation of rivers and the situation of the power sector in the State, the activists said.

The Athirappilly project would wipe out region’s rich biodiversity and make hundreds of tribals homeless, they said.

A protest meeting on Tuesday at Athirappilly will be inaugurated by film actor Innocent. Film directors Lohithadas, Kamal and Sundar Das are expected to participate.

A seminar on ‘Kerala’s Power Sector - possibilities and challenges’ will be organised on Wednesday at Chalakkudy.
