NEW DELHI: The Olympic medals in the Bejing Games from Vijender Singh and Sushil Kumar have opened more avenues for Indian boxing and wrestling. It was stated that Sahara had ”emotionally adopted” the two disciplines by pledging support for 17 wrestlers and 13 boxers, as a start, in a press conference here on Monday. Refusing categorically to divulge the financial commitment for the cause, the Chairman of Sahara, Subrata Roy, said that every need of the selected boxers and wrestlers would be addressed so that they could focus totally on their sport. It was announced the list would be pruned every year and the selected athletes would get support on a graded system, based on their performance. In boxing, Vijender Singh, Akhil Kumar, Jitender Kumar, Antaresh Lakra, Dinesh Kumar, Amandeep Singh, Nanao Singh, Narjit Singh, Chhote Lal Yadav, Rakesh Kalaskar, Dilbagh Singh, Balwinder Beniwal and Santhosh Kumar Virothu have been selected. Everyone except Akhil Kumar and Jitender, busy with their training schedule in South Africa, were present. In wrestling, Sushil Kumar, Yogeshwar Dutt, Palwinder Singh Cheema, Rajeev Tomar, Rahul Aware, Vinod Kumar, Hardeep Singh, Amit Kumar, Ramesh Kumar, Mausam Khatri, Joginder Kumar, Hari Krishan, Ravinder Singh, Vikram Sanghwan, Rajbir Chhikara, Manoj Kumar and Dharmender Dalal were identified for support. It was also mentioned that the Bhiwani Boxing Club and the Guru Hanuman Akhara were being adopted in the programme for upgradation of facilities etc. Sahara has also promised to be the title sponsor for the next four editions of the National boxing championship.
