Ernakulam district is set to become totally e-literate. After deferring the deadline on more than one occasion, e-literacy, the first phase of Akshaya Project, is set to achieve its target in the district by the end of March. Of the 5,12,270 e-literate people in the district, 3,43,753 were trained in basic computer literacy by Akshaya, said K.K. Latheef, coordinator, Akshaya District Mission. The objective of the project that was launched in the district in December 2005 was to make at least one member from every household e-literate through a 15-hour course. The target was set based on the 2001 census according to which the district had 5,12,270 households, said Mr. Latheef. Kochi Corporation, Muvattupuzha and Thripunithura mincipalities and Thuravoor panchayat, which lagged behind the rest of the district in the e-literacy project, are also set to accomplish the feat by March 31. Kochi Corporation adopted a unique method to spread e-literacy after it was found that the 14 Akshaya centres initially allotted within its limits were insufficient to achieve the stated objective. To overcome this, 30 efficient Akshaya entrepreneurs from the city outskirts were roped in to cover the corporation area with the approval of the Corporation Council, said Mr. Latheef. Each entrepreneur was allotted two divisions each with sub-centres in at least six different locations within the division. Thus, Kudumbasree units, anganwadis, party offices, vacant buildings of the corporation, individual households and even police stations were turned into centres for computer learning. Seventy-six police personnel in a station within the South railway station premises were given basic computer training in this manner, said Ashokan, an entrepreneur who rendered training. Initial discussions have been held with the Police Association to give Internet training to policemen, he said. A training programme for the residents of the railway quarters is set to begin on Wednesday. About 300 people, including the family members of railway employees, would receive training at the space allotted by the Dakshin Railway Employees’ Union. M.P. Praveen
