Cleaner technology: A CFL lasts about 10 times more than an average incandescent bulb apart from reducing power consumption. HYDERABAD: The distribution of compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) proposed to be implemented in the North Circle of Ranga Reddy district may begin only after April. The distribution under the Centre’s ‘Bachat Lamp Yojana’, is being taken up as a pilot project in the circle with collaboration from the Bureau of Energy Efficiency and International Resources Group Limited. Energy savings are estimated to be about 25 megawatts in the North Circle alone upon successful completion of the project, discom officials said. If extended to all the seven districts under the limits of CPDCL, the savings could amount to about 300 to 400 megawatts during peak hours. Under the scheme, ordinary incandescent bulbs in the households (not commercial) will be replaced with CFLs subject to a maximum of four, upon payment of Rs.15 for each bulb. Baseline studyThe users will have to surrender an ordinary bulb for every CFL costing about Rs.150 otherwise. The Chairman, Managing Director of CPDCL, G. Saiprasad, while replying to a query at the APERC public hearing recently, said the baseline study was being carried out and that the project was expected to be completed by this June. Sridhar Samudrala, the Chief Executive Officer of International Energy Consultant Co. and local consultant for the project, said that about five lakh households were identified in the baseline study. Long lastingA CFL will last up to 10,000 hours, about 10 times more than the average life of an incandescent bulb, apart from reducing the power consumption and thus the power bills. Unlike bulbs of inferior quality flooding the market, the Philips CFL will come with a warranty of three years.
