CHENNAI: The Delhi-based KRBL, largest basmati rice milling company, on Sunday launched its India Gate-organic basmati rice in Chennai. Anoop Kumar Gupta, Joint Managing Director, KRBL, who was here in connection with the launch, told The Hindu, that the company introduced the new organic rice after an extensive research to meet the requirements of health conscious and discerning customers. The JMD said the product was priced at Rs. 149 a kg. India Gate was the flagship brand out of 18 brands available for the domestic market. He said the country was producing 5,000 tonnes of organic basmati rice annually and out of which 4,000-4,200 tonnes were being exported. KRBL alone was producing around 2,000 tonnes and out of which around 1,500 tonnes were being exported to the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Africa and North American markets. The company has an integrated plant in Punjab with a capacity of 150 tonnes an hour and another unit in Gaziabad in Uttar Pradesh with a capacity of 45 tonnes an hour. Besides, it has a grading unit in Delhi. For the year ended March 31, 2008, KRBL’s net profit was Rs. 55 crore on a turnover was Rs. 996.52 crore.
