SAVE NATURE: Actor Innocent inaugurating a protest meeting against the Athirappilly hydroelectric project on Tuesday.

Thrissur: Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA) president Innocent has expressed solidarity with the Chalakkudy River Protection Forum in their protest against the Athirappilly hydroelectric project.

Inaugurating a protest meeting at Athirappilly on Tuesday, the actor said that industrialisation and development should not be at the cost of destruction of environment. Film director Sunder Das presided over the meeting.

The Chalakkudy River Protection Forum, an umbrella organisation of about 30 voluntary organisations, organised the programme in connection with the first anniversary of their protest against the Athirappilly project. Apart from ecological problems, the project was not practical owing to various techno-political reasons, said M. Mohan Das, joint convenor of the forum. The forum wanted to take the protest beyond Athirappilly. The State could not afford anymore major hydroelectric projects. In future, it has to think about alternative energy sources, he pointed out.

A seminar on ‘Kerala’s Power Sector possibilities and challenges’ will be organised on Wednesday.
