Anguish over neglect of Telugu language

Correspondent

Implementation of language must begin at home, say speakers

Collector flags off awareness rally

Separate ministry for implementation of language demanded

VIZIANAGARAM: Expressing anguish over the neglect of Telugu, former member of the Rajya Sabha and chairman of Hindi Academy Yarlagadda Lakshmi Prasad, Chairman of Official Language Commission A.B.K. Prasad, writer N. Innaiah and many more, who participated in the Telugu Bhasha Samskriti Chaitanya Yatra, have said that implementation of the language must begin at home.

At the meeting at Kakatiya Kalyanamandapam, Dr. Lakshmi Prasad said that there was no restriction on learning a number of other languages but, at the same time, one must not neglect his own mother tongue. He felt sorry for those who had completed their education without learning even Telugu alphabets. Promotion of language meant protection of ones own spiritual and cultural heritage. He said that Lok Nayak Foundation (Visakhapatnam), as part of veteran journalist Narla Venkateswara Rao’s centenary celebrations, launched the four-day chaitanya yatra from Vijayawada on February 21 with an aim to create awareness among people on the need to save Telugu.

Compulsory learning

Mr. A.B.K. Prasad said that neglect of the language was mainly due to the reforms brought in the education system. The Government had issued GO 86 making Telugu as a subject of compulsory learning from class 1 to 10 in all government and private schools. Dr. Innaiah predicted protest demonstrations by language lovers in the near future. He demanded a separate ministry for implementation of the language. Earlier, Collector G. Ram Narayana Reddy flagged off the awareness rally at fort on Tuesday and it ended with the garlanding of Gurajada Appa Rao’s statue at M.R. College (Autonomous). A number of school children, Justice G. Bhavani Prasad, Bobby Vardhan, Head of the Department (Journalism), AU , Dr. Kolli Sarada (daughter of Narla), Vijayakumar, publisher of Emsco books, Gazal Srinivas, Vusirakala Chandrasekhar, president of Atreya Smaraka Kala Peetham, D. Atchuta Rao, Press Academy member and others participated in the rally.
