Srikakulam: The State Government has been implementing several welfare and developmental schemes for 8,800 fishermen and their families in the district . Under the group accident insurance scheme being implemented for fishermen Rs.50,000 was being paid in case of death and Rs.25,000 for permanent disability. So far 89 cases have been settled out of 121 claims. Besides, a relief-cum-savings scheme was being implemented to provide relief during the lean fishing months by promoting savings among the fishermen. A fisherman has to deposit Rs.600 in bank for eight months from July to February at Rs.75 per month. The State and Central governments will provide Rs.300 plus Rs 300 as matching grant. The amount will be disbursed to the beneficiaries in four monthly instalments from March to June during lean months at the rate of Rs.300 per month . Under the scheme 3,630 fishermen have been covered. Fish landing centres were established for coastal fishermen in different coastal villages in the district. Till now 54 fish landing centres had been set up for fishermen to unload their catch at the fish landing centers.
