Panel to study the status of women

NEW DELHI: The government will set up a high-power committee of eminent persons and experts to study the status of women in India to enable it (government) to take expeditious action on their socio-economic development and empowerment.
A National Mission of Empowerment of Women will also be formed for implementation of women-centric programmes in a mission mode to achieve better coordination and synergy between the participating stakeholders.
Making these announcements in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday during his reply to the discussion on the interim budget, External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee, who holds the charge of Finance also, said the recommendations of the Committee of Governors are also under consideration.
The government intends to restructure and revitalise the Rashtriya Mahila Kosh to scale up their activities, including that of backward and forward linkages to function as a single-window facilitator and service provider for self-help groups.
