AIADMK stages walkout from council meeting

TIRUCHI: Main Opposition All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) staged a walkout from the Corporation Council meeting on Tuesday opposing the tabling of the Corporation Budget for 2009-10 and condemning the civic body’s “failure” to implement the works announced in its last Budget.

The AIADMK members were on their feet even while the chairman of the Corporation Standing Committee on Taxation and Finance, G. Ramesh, was handing over the Budget document to Mayor Sarubala R.Tondaiman.

Newly appointed AIADMK floor leader J. Srinivasan alleged that the Corporation had failed to execute works announced in the Budget 2008-09 and opposed the tabling of the Budget for the next financial year. Raising slogans against the Corporation, Mr.Srinivasan led the walkout.

Earlier, at an urgent meeting before the Budget sitting, the Corporation Council adopted a resolution for the approval of bids received for six out of the eight packages for the Rs.144.86-crore drinking water supply augmentation scheme with the concurrence of the Technical Committee of the Commissionerate of Municipal Administration.

The approval of Technical Committee is to be sought as all the bidders have quoted five per cent above the estimates for the packages.
