Sonia sets deadline for shortlist

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Congress president Sonia Gandhi has set a deadline of March 5 for receipt of a shortlist of candidates for the Lok Sabha elections.

The deadline was set at a meeting of general secretaries and chairpersons of screening committees with Ms. Gandhi here on Tuesday.

In January, at a similar meeting, general secretaries were asked to communicate to their respective Pradesh Congress Committees to be ready with shortlists by January 30.

However, that deadline expired with most Pradesh Election Committees not doing the job.

Tuesday’s meeting was the first after Ms. Gandhi reshuffled the All India Congress Committee last week.

As to whether the Congress had decided to do away with the Antony Committee recommendation to announce candidates at least 90 days in advance, party spokesman Manish Tewari said efforts were on to finalise the candidates at the earliest.
