Additional Solicitor General Mohan dead

New Delhi: R. Mohan, Additional Solicitor General of India in the Supreme Court, died here on Tuesday after a brief illness. He was 59 and is survived by his wife and daughter. Mr. Mohan’s appointment came in July 2004 and since then had been appearing for the Centre in many sensitive cases, including the Sethusamudram case.

He endeared himself with the members of the Bar and the Bench with his simplicity and persuasive skills.

Hailing from Pappireddipatty village in Dharmapuri district of Tamil Nadu, Mr. Mohan practised in the Madras High Court in various branches of law and served as professor of Law in the Presidency College.

Later, he shifted his practice to the Supreme Court and was designated senior advocate in 1995.

As senior counsel for the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagham, he had appeared in the quo warranto case against the former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa; TANSI case, petitions against the dismissal of the Tamil Nadu government servants and transfer of Ms. Jayalalithaa’s wealth cases to Karnataka.

Mr. Mohan has authored many law books, including Judicial Interpretation of Pollution Control Laws in India.
