SME ragging case: three found guilty

KOTTAYAM: Special court judge K. Sasidharan Nair has found three of the accused in the SME (School of Medical Education) ragging case guilty.
Six others, including three students and three officials, accused number four to nine, were found not guilty.
Sentence today
The sentence will be delivered on Thursday.
The case pertains to the sexual assault on a first year B.Sc. (Nursing) student by her seniors in the name of ragging.
The court found Renjith Varghese, Regi Villa, Odanavattom, Kollam; Sherin, Thazhe Veettil, Pullimala, Muvattupuzha; and Shefique Yusef, Sani Manzil, Athirampuzha, guilty.
They have been found guilty under Indian Penal Code (IPC) Section 354 (use of criminal force to woman with intent to outrage modesty); 376 (2)g (gang rape); 366 (abduction of a woman); 366 (a) abduction of minor girl; and also under provisions of the Prohibition of Ragging Act.
The court revoked the bail enjoyed by the three and they were taken to the special sub-jail, here. The incident took place on October 21, 2005, on the Gandhi Nagar campus of the School of Medical Education under Mahatma Gandhi University.
As per the prosecution, the victim was sexually assaulted in the deserted laboratory of the School of Medical Education. The charge-sheet was filed on January 17, 2006.
