Staff Reporter

KOLLAM: The Society of Wetland Scientists in the United States has accepted an abstract of a research paper by Harikuttan Unnithan, Reader in the Physics Department of D.B. College Sasthamcotta. The paper is on the subject ‘Hydrochemistry, ecology and geology of a Ramsar wetland in South India — a review.’ The subject pertains to the freshwater Sasthamcotta Lake in Kollam district.

With the acceptance of the abstract, the subject will be presented at this year’s meeting of the Society of Wetland Scientists to be held at Madison in the US. The abstract states that alkalinity in the lake has increased due to human activities. There is also a high incidence of coliform bacteria in the lake.

About 24 species of fishes and prawns have been identified. But the depth of the lake has decreased at the rate of 0.5 metres in the last 14 years which could be due to sedimentation.
