NEW DELHI: Union Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde dedicated the National Load Despatch Centre (NLDC) of the Power Grid Corporation of India to the nation here on Wednesday. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Shinde announced that the NLDC would facilitate optimal exchange of power between regions. With the NLDC in place, he said, grid security at the national level would improve considerably providing real time information at one centralised location. Congratulating Power Grid for creating the facility, the Minister said the public sector unit stands tall as one of the largest transmission utilities in the world and is well known for its operational excellence and timely execution of transmission projects. CrucialDelhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said though the NLDC is located in Delhi as a monitoring and supervising body, it would play a crucial role in ensuring smooth and uninterrupted electricity throughout the country. It would facilitate avoidance of cascade tripping and maximisation of inter-regional energy transfers, she added. Earlier, Mr. Shinde expressed confidence that about 90,000 MW capacity would be added during the current Five Year Plan which is roughly four times the capacity added in any previous Plan period. The new NLDC in Delhi also has a “back-up” facility in Kolkata to take care of any eventuality. It will be the apex body for ensuring integrated operation of the National Grid and power system in the country.
