THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Opposition on Wednesday staged a walkout in the Assembly in protest against the State government’s inaction in settling the tribal land agitation at Chengara in Pathanamthitta district. Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan (Congress) sought permission for an adjournment motion on the issue. He alleged that although the agitation had been going on for a long time and the poor tribal families involved in the stir were in great difficulties, the government was making no effort to settle the issue. In reply, Revenue Minister K.P. Rajendran said the government saw it as a matter of policy that all landless tribal families and other deserving poor people should have their own land. He described the initiatives the government had already made to distribute land to such people. This exercise was going on. The land sought by the agitating tribal families at Chengara was under a court dispute. The government could not do what it pleased with this land. The government was even facing a contempt of court proceeding for not carrying out the court’s order to evicting the agitating families from the land.
