Free software meet from tomorrow

Staff Reporter

NIT-C to host meet for fifth time

KOZHIKODE: FOSSMeet@NITC 2009, a three-day event on free and open source software (FOSS) organised by students’ branches of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the Computer Society of India, the Computer Science and Engineering Association, and the GNU/Linux Users Group Calicut, will begin on the National Institute of Technology, Calicut (NIT-C) campus, near here, on Friday.

Dr. Saini from the Natural Resources Centre for Free/Open Source Software (NRCFOSS), an organisation that was behind India’s indigenous version of GNU/Linux-BOSS, will inaugurate the event on Friday evening. It will be followed by a talk by Eben Moglen, who was behind the drafting of the General Public License of the GNU. FOSSMeet@NITC is one of the four largest FOSS events in the country. The event is being held at the NIT-C for the fifth successive year. The meet will be attended by school and college students and IT professionals from south India, A. Rajagopalan, president, Calicut Chapter of the Computer Society of India, told presspersons here on Tuesday.

Attractions

The major attractions are a video conference by Paul Frields, project leader of Fedora, a famous flavour of the open source Linux operating system; a workshop on open source graphics; audio and video editing by Niyam Bhushan; and introduction to contributing to K Desktop Environment (KDE) by Pradeepto Bhattacharjeya.

FOSSMeet@NITC also hosts FOSS@School, a one-day event to popularise open sources operating systems such as GNU\Linux and others aimed at primary and high school students of schools that follow the State syllabus.

Last year, over 300 delegates and 20 speakers attended the FOSSMeet@NITC. This time, it will try to release a customised GNU\Linux operating system that will contain popular software in demand by the academia.

Interactions

Dr. Saini will interact with students participating in the event as well as faculty members of the NIT-C. Fedora/Red Hat Inc. is the co-sponsor and the Kerala State IT Mission and the NRCFOSS are the associate sponsors.
