“Upgrade schools, start PHC in new taluk”

Staff Reporter

PUDUKOTTAI: The carving out of a new taluk with Ponnamaravathy as headquarters has raised the hopes of people and political parties to get their felt-demands conceded. The new taluk was carved out from the Tirumayam taluk last week.

Submission of petitions to the taluk offices has been on the rise.

The Ponnamaravathy taluk unit of the Communist Party of India (CPI) has urged the Education Department to upgrade a couple of schools in the taluk.

Although the villagers had complied with the norms on deposit of funds towards public contribution a few years ago, the in-ordinate delay in upgrading the schools has put the students to a great hardship, the taluk secretary of the party, A.L. Raj, said here on Wednesday.

He said that the villagers of Keezhadhaniyam had deposited Rs. 1 lakh for upgrading the middle school into a high school.

Similarly, the residents of a number of villages had donated Rs. 2 lakh for upgrading the Government High School in Ponpudupatti village into a higher secondary school.

A large number of students of Vegupatti, Usilampatti, Kattupatti, Vellaiyandipatti, Manapatti, Kesarapatti and Indira Nagar would benefit in a big way through the upgrading of the high school into a higher secondary institute. The lone aided school in Ponnamaravathy could not admit all the students of these villages, he said.

Not upgraded

Although the donation had been made a few years ago, the Education Department had not upgraded these institutes till this academic year, he said.

The District secretary of the party, S.P. Muthukumaran said that there was a strong case for starting a primary health centre at Meladhaniyam village in Ponnamarvathy taluk.

“Take action”

He also said that the district administration should take immediate action for the re-construction of an anganwadi in Ponnamaravathy. As a large number of colleges were located on the Ponnamarvathy – Aranthangi sector, the State Transport Corporation should introduce new bus services on this sector for the benefit of the college students.

He also said that a sluice at Thottiyampatti village on the busy Ponnamaravathy – Madurai road, which was in a dilapidated condition, should be immediately repaired for ensuring safety of bus passengers.

Led by Mr. Raj, the volunteers of the party staged a demonstration in front of the bus stand in Ponnamaravathy on Tuesday.

The National Committee member A.M. Gopu was among those who participated in the agitation.
