Yet another man commits suicide on Lankan issue

VIRUDHUNAGAR: B. Gokularathinam of Ceylon Colony near Sivakasi committed suicide “in support of Sri Lankan Tamils” on the Collectorate premises here on Wednesday afternoon.

Gokularathinam, who returned from Sri Lanka in early 1980’s, had set himself afire near the helipad on the premises and ran towards the road where he fell down, said T. Senthil Kumar, Superintendent of Police.

He died on the spot.

He carried a DMK flag and left a suicide note stating that the welfare of Tamils in Sri Lanka should be protected and rights of Tamils in the State upheld.

Father of three children, Gokularathinam, who was working in a fireworks unit near Sivakasi, also wished Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi a speedy recovery.

Collector K. Raghupathi and the Superintendent of Police inspected the scene of suicide.

Ministers pay respects

The Minister for Backward Classes, K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran, and School Education, Thangam Thennarasu, on Wednesday night paid homage to B. Gokularathinam, who committed suicide on the Collectorate premises.

The Ministers rushed from Chennai on hearing about the incident and paid respects to the deceased at the Government hospital.

The body was kept at the hospital after post-mortem. They also consoled the aggrieved family members.

Earlier in the day, the MDMK leader, Vaiko, paid respect to the deceased.
