CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi has announced Rs.5,000 as immediate interim relief towards medical expenses of those injured in the clash between advocates and the police on the Madras High Court campus.
Making a suo motu statement in the Assembly on Wednesday, Law and PWD Minister Durai Murugan said compensation for vehicles would be given depending on the damage.
Mr. Durai Murugan said the Chief Minister wanted to give interim relief since it would take some time for the Justice Gnanaprakasam Committee to submit its report on the damage to property and injuries to persons during the clash. A team, comprising Higher Education Minister K. Ponmudy, Health Minister M.R.K. Panneerselvam and former Minister Poongothai Aladi Aruna, had visited advocates and police personnel admitted to hospitals and explained the situation to the Chief Minister. Based on their report, he announced the relief.
Later participating in a debate on the budget, Congress whip Peter Alphonse said that a conspiracy had been hatched to topple the DMK government by instigating the police, advocates and judiciary against one another.
He said some trouble-makers and anti-social elements entered the court hall in the guise of advocates and attacked Janata Party leader Subramanian Swamy. “The government should identify the parties behind these incidents and send a proposal to the Centre recommending a ban.” When PMK leader G.K. Mani wanted to know how hundreds of police personnel entered the court premises without the permission of the Chief Justice and the Registrar, Mr. Peter Alphonse said at a meeting of police officers and three Judges of the High Court, it was decided to keep a quick reaction team at a vantage point in the court.
Responding to Mr. Mani’s demand, Mr. Durai Murugan said journalists would also be included in the Justice Gnanaprakasam Committee.
