NEW DELHI: Drawn encounters on all four boards kept defending champion Viswanathan Anand in the third place after the fifth round of the Linares chess tournament at the Spanish city of Linares on Tuesday. Anand, playing black, drew with Vassily Ivanchuk in the day’s longest battle lasting 65 moves. This Slav Defence game ended with the players having a rook and a pawn each. Anand has three points, half a point less than the leaders Levon Aronian and Alexander Grischuk. Nine more rounds remain in this eight-player double round-robin competition. Grischuk settled for a 34-move draw with Norway’s Magnus Carlsen while Chinese debutant Wang Yue held Levon Aronian in 26 moves. Leineir Dominguez Perez proved equal to Azerbaijan’s Teimour Radjabov in 62 moves. Meanwhile, in Sofia, Bulgaria’s Veselin Topalov drew the sixth game with USA’s Gata Kamsky in their eight-game World Candidates match. Topalov, who played with black pieces in this 43-move battle arising out of the advanced variation of Caro Kann, leads 3.5-2.5.
