Mutineers surrender arms in Bangladesh
Haroon Habib
DHAKA: Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) men surrendered their arms to the authorities on Thursday ending their two-day revolt a few hours after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s ultimatum to do so and go back to the barracks or face tough measures.
Officers killed
The mutineers killed an unspecified number of Army officers posted in the paramilitary border force. The Director-General of the BDR Major General Shakil Ahmed is still untraced.
BDR personnel hoisted white flags at the headquarters in Pilkhana symbolising their surrender. The government had declared a general amnesty to them .
The arms and ammunition were surrendered before Home Minister Sahara Khatun and Finance Minister AMA Muhith at the headquarters, which witnessed a bloody revolt of the lower ranks for the last two days .
Officials said the surrender of arms might take hours as several thousand jawans had revolted against their “corrupt officers.”
Even as the surrender was in progress, the mutineers freed several hundred family members and Army officers they had held held hostage.
