Students showcase their talent at science exhibition

Budding scientists: Collector V.K Shanmugam interacting with students at the District Level Science Expo-2009 held at PMC TECH Er. Perumal Manimekalai Polytechnic at Koneripalli near Hosur on Thursday.

KRISHNAGIRI: Students from 22 schools, including some private matriculation schools, participated in the two-day ‘District Level Science Expo-2009’ conducted by Tamil Nadu Science Forum with PMC TECH Er. Perumal Manimekalai Polytechnic & Engineering College at Koneripalli near Hosur in Krishnagiri district on Thursday.

Projects

Students from primary to high school levels displayed various science projects.

Nearly 140 science projects were exhibited and explained by the young and budding scientists guided by their teachers.

S. Saratha, a 9th standard student from Government Higher Secondary School, Shoolagiri, presented a project on mind mapping, `My dream engine of terrorist control’, with assistance from her teacher T. Saravanan.

Students from Government Higher Secondary School at Sinthanampalli came up with 13 projects like ‘Robot tree’, ‘Newton Car’, ‘Drainage Controlling Machine’, ‘Universe’, ‘Pascal Law’, ‘Modern Power Generator’ etc.

Students from Government Higher Secondary School at Kuruparapalli set up 10 experiments on how to control global warming, green house effect awareness, cultivation through solar energy and sound travel etc.

S. Shanti from Government Girls Higher Secondary School at Bargur and a Young Scientist Award winner at the national level science exhibition held recently in Nagaland, showcased her team’s simple method of water purification to remove dissolved salts from drinking water.

She had got the young scientist award from the President of India for her project called ‘The study of quality of drinking water in Bargur Union’.

Students from the same school also presented two projects on ISRO’s success story, Chandrayan-I, guided by their Chemistry teacher C. Suguna.

Other schools

Besides government schools, Veilankanni Matriculation School, Shoolagiri, and John Bosco School, Hosur, also participated in the exhibition.

Interactive programme

During the exhibition the Science Forum also organised the ‘Meet the Scientist Programme’ for two days.

S. Sethu Raman of TNSF interacted with the children during two sessions on Thursday about the Chandrayan-I and Darwin 200 theory. On Friday, scientists from IGCAR will interact with the children about the Big Bang Theory.

District Collector V.K. Shanmugam declared open the exhibition. In his speech, he said time management, concentration is the need of the hour among the students to achieve their goals in their life. P. Kumar, Secretary, Er. Perumal Manimekalai Group of Institutions, addressed the children. D. Muthu Kumar of PMCTECH welcomed the gathering. S. Subramani, State Secretary, TNSF spoke.

Arul Mozhi of PMCTECH proposed the vote of thanks.
