MALAPPURAM: The United Democratic Front (UDF) candidates won the by-elections held at three wards in the district on Thursday. The Left Democratic Front (LDF) lost power in Tenhipalam panchayat following the victory of UDF candidate Mullasseri Suseela Gopi at Chenakkalangadi ward. Congess candidate Suseela defeated LDF’s independent candidate Chalattil Baby Girija by 13 votes. Ms. Suseela polled 513 votes while Ms. Girija got 500 votes. At Ambalapuraya ward in Vengara panchayat, Congress candidate Moideen Valiyakkathodi defeated LDF independent candidate Mammad Thacharupadikkal by 242 votes. Mr. Moideen got 450 of the total 756 votes polled. Mr. Mammad polled 208 votes, and another independent A.K. Varadan got 96 votes. At Koottai town in Mangalam grama panchayat, Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) candidate Padinjarepurakkal Zubair defeated LDF independent candidate Bava Master by 320 votes. Mr. Zubair polled 556 votes.
