‘No plan to open medical college’

BANGALORE: Minister for Medical Education Ramachandra Gowda informed the Legislative Assembly on Thursday that there was no proposal before the Government to open a medical college in Chickballapur district.

In a reply to a question by Sampangi N. (Congress) during Question Hour, Mr. Gowda said that 25 acres, a 400-bed hospital, and Rs. 125 crore would be required to open a medical college in the district.

A new district had been carved out for administrative convenience and not for establishing the medical college there.

However, the Government would grant permission to private parties to set up the college.

No proposal had come from legislators seeking establishment of a government medical college in the district, the Minister said.

Medical specialists and doctors refused to join government medical colleges because of various reasons. To meet the Medical Council of India conditions, the department had hired doctors from other States for the current academic year, Mr. Gowda said.

The Minister said the State had 68 paramedical colleges, 39 dental colleges, 299 nursing schools, 10 homoeopathy colleges and four Unani colleges. But admissions to all these colleges were below their intake capacity. Only a few students had sought admission to the government dental college in Bellary during 2008-09, the Minister said.

ITIs

Minister for Labour B.N. Bachche Gowda told A.S. Patil (Congress) that steps would be taken to open new industrial training institutes (ITIs) in the State during 2009-10 based on the availability of funds in the budget.

Replying to a question, he said there was no proposal before the Government to open a new ITI in the Devarahipparagi Assembly constituency.

Mr. Gowda said 85 legislators had submitted proposals seeking institutes in their constituencies.

There are 1,075 it is in the State and their intake was one lakh.
