CHENNAI: The State government will bring to book those behind the letter sent to Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly and former Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, which warned of an attack on her and her residence, Electricity Minister Arcot N. Veeraswami said on Thursday. Responding to a special call attention motion given by the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), Mr. Veeraswami told the Assembly that the police were investigating the matter. On receipt of a complaint, the police went to the residence of Mohan at T. Nagar whose name was mentioned in the letter as the sender. On enquiry, it was found that Mr. Mohan and his mother were local functionaries of the AIADMK. Mr. Mohan denied he had sent the letter. He told the police that the letter could have been sent by his political adversaries. Security for the former Chief Minister has been strengthened, Mr. Veeraswami said. O. Paneerselvam, Deputy Leader of the Opposition, complained that adequate security was not provided to Ms. Jayalalithaa during her visit to Theni, Rasipuram and Pasumpon. Property TaxWhen S. Peter Alphonse (Congress) pointed out that property tax of about 500 assesses in the Kadyanallur municipality was hiked during 2007-2008 even before the general revision of tax in 2008-2009, and there was no proper announcement, Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin said the government proposed to constitute an official committee to go into the matter. Further action would be taken on the basis of its report. To a query whether the assessees concerned would be allowed to pay the old rates of the tax, the Minister replied in the affirmative. Though there was no provision under the law for the payment at the old rates, the case in question did not involve revision. But, the permission to pay the old rates was given as a corrective measure only for the assessees concerned on the assumption that there were errors. After the committee’s report, arrears would be collected, the Minister explained.
