Water melons are on pavements of a few roads already
WELCOME TREAT: Water melons have begun flooding the city roads much ahead of the peak summer. CHENNAI: Seasonal vegetables and fruits such as water melons and cucumber have made their entry into the city markets well ahead of peak summer, much to the delight of people who want to escape the scorching sun. The city experienced a maximum temperature of 35 degree Celsius on Wednesday as against the average temperature of 30 degree Celsius. However, Meteorological Department officials said summer is yet to start in the city. Soaring temperature on one or two days cannot be a determining factor for the onset of the season. The peak summer days will start only in April. Motorists are greeted by water melons heaped up on the pavements of a few roads already. Vendors at the Koyambedu fruit market said that fruits such as guava and Mozambi have also started arriving to the market. Fruit vendors in the market said water melons that are usually supplied only in March have begun coming from places such as Hosur and Villupuram in Tamil Nadu and the neighbouring states in February this year. Every day, market receives 10 truck loads of water melons. They are sold for Rs.5 per kg at the wholesale market. The retailers price it at Rs.5 more per kg. A spokesperson of Kovai Pazhamudhir Nilayam said, “Only when the summer begins to peak, we start getting some of the best varieties. The ones coming now may look huge, but they will not taste too sweet,” he said. He said the wholesale rate for the fruit was Rs.7 or Rs.8 for the big variety and Rs. 5 for smaller-sized fruits. As the summers sets in varieties from as far as Ahmedabad and Uttar Pradesh would start coming, he said. A yellow variety of water melon has also been coming off late. “We call it Mithali. It tastes just the same, but is grown from imported seeds and costs a little more.” However, customers of wary of the yellow variety and prefer the usual fruit which is red inside, he said, adding that while some varieties of mangoes are available in segments of the market, the sought-after, popular varieties will take some more time. Cucumber is another seasonal favourite that is available in plenty at the wholesale market. A kg of cucumber is priced at Rs.2-Rs.3. Similarly, Mozambi would also cost cheaper at Rs.3 per piece. The city would soon have its supply of tender palmyra fruit and pomegranate.
