dated February 27, 1959: Ice block for Africa

The 3,000 inhabitants of Mo-I-Rana, an Arctic Circle town in North Norway, turned out in the main street on February 22 to give a rousing send-off to a three-ton block of ice at the start of its 6,300-mile lorry trip to Libreville in French Equatorial Africa. The project is being organised by a firm of Scandinavian fibre-glass wool manufacturers to demonstrate the insulating qualities of their product. With the ice is seven hundredweight of medicine for Dr. Albert Schweitzer, the philanthropist, at his hospital at Lambarene, about 100 miles from Libreville.
