In protest against police action in Chennai

NEW DELHI: Lawyers of the Delhi High Court Bar Association will abstain from the courts on Friday in protest against the police action against the Madras High Court lawyers on the court campus in Chennai on February 19.

The Bar took the decision to abstain from the courts in response to a call issued by the Bar Council of India to observe February 27 as a “Protest Day” against the lathi-charge on lawyers, said its secretary D.K. Sharma in a statement.

Earlier, various bar associations of the Capital held a meeting at the DHCBA office to chalk out a common strategy to organise agitations in protest against the police action on the Madras High Court lawyers.

Madras High Court Bar Association president N. Paul Kangraj and Federation of Tamil Nadu Bar Associations president R. Gandhi briefed the meeting in detail about the incident on the Madras High Court campus on February 19.

It was decided at the meeting that the DHCBA along with the Supreme Court Bar Association and the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) Bar Association would file an intervening application in the ongoing proceedings in the Supreme Court in connection with the Madras High Court incident.

The DHCBA adopted a resolution seeking a judicial inquiry into the incident by a sitting judge of the Madras High Court.

“The reprehensible act of entering into the court premises and assaulting the judicial officers as well as female lawyers and the destruction of private and public property by the armed policemen is unfortunate and should never be allowed to repeated,” the resolution said.

Guidelines

The DHCBA urged the Supreme Court to issue binding guidelines to govern the conduct of police personnel while dealing with the legal fraternity.

Meanwhile, bar associations of all five district courts here also decided to observe a protest day on the respective court campuses on Friday.
