PALANI: Cleanliness and healthcare to pilgrims and upgrading facilities will be given top priority under tourism development plans for the temple town. Tourism Department fund will be utilised to beautify temple area and create theme park for pilgrims to relax and other funds for health care, according to Collector R. Kirlosh Kumar. Addressing a special meeting on tourism development in the temple town with all officials and representatives of local bodies here on Thursday, he said that there were plans to set up a trauma care unit at Palani Government Hospital to offer emergency medical care to accident victims on highways around Palani. Proposals in this connection would be sent to the government to execute the project under Tamil Nadu Health System Project. (At present, emergency cases have been referred to government headquarter hospitals in Madurai or Coimbatore.). He advised all officials to send proposals within 15 days to finalise these projects. Next meeting in this connection would be convened on March 12. AC ward exclusively for burn casesMeanwhile, doctors from Palani GH requested to establish an air-conditioned ward exclusively for burn cases, ventilator facility and air conditioned mortuary. Palani Municipal chairman R. Rajamanickam insisted on joint effort by both municipality and Sri Dhandayuthapaniswamy temple administration for over all development of the town and the temple for pilgrims’ comfort. Total ban on plastic bags was a must to maintain the town clean and green. The construction of arches on national highways at the entry points of Palani would enhance beauty of the town. Regional Transport Officer K. Selvakumar appealed to remove all trees on both sides of Palani-Dindigul highway to prevent accidents at night. An eight-acre site on Palani by pass will suffice to create a theme park. Funds had already been sanctioned for this project, he added. The construction of an abetment, demolition of columns of old bridge across Shanmuga River and erection of fence around bathing spot in the river would prevent drowning of pilgrims, suggested PWD officials. Treating water let out by tonsure centre on Shanmuga River bank was a necessity as hair pieces were found in drinking water in downstream villages. Representatives of local bodies said seven panchayats around town have been receiving thousands of pilgrims every year. Toilet and water facilities should be improved in these panchayats for comfort of pilgrims.
