Work on indoor stadium to begin soon

Staff Reporter

Tirupur: The construction of an indoor stadium complex planned by the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT) in Tirupur city at a cost of Rs. 1 crore is expected to commence during the first half of 2009-10 fiscal, according to Sudeep Jain, member secretary, SDAT.

Speaking to reporters here after inspecting the site identified for the stadium on Chikkanna Government College premises on Thursday evening, he said that the stadium, to be spread over an expanse of five acres, would be built on private-public partnership (PPP) mode.

“Of the total expenditure, 50 per cent will be contributed from the government exchequer and the rest will be raised through private contributions,” he added.

It will have facilities to conduct volleyball, basketball and badminton, among others.

He said that possibilities were also being explored to construct a multi-purpose stadium for outdoor sports too adjacent to the indoor stadium complex.

“This will have an athletic track for holding running events,” he said. Collector C. Samyamoorthy and Revenue Divisional Officer P. Murugesh were present.
