Alandur meet on plastic bags ban

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: The Alandur Municipality, whose ban on use of plastic bags by shops comes into force on Sunday, convened a meeting of traders on Wednesday to impress on them the need to make the areas plastic-free.

An official of the municipality told The Hindu that the traders were urged to use alternatives such as paper bags. They were also briefed about the penal provisions if the ban was violated. As part of the campaign against use to plastics, school students took out two rallies in Adambakkam and Nanganallur.

“We will be pasting stickers at shops regarding the ban. We hope that once shop owners come forward and refrain from using plastics, the residents will follow suit,” he said.
