CHENNAI: The Rotary Club of Madras Mount presented its ‘For the Sake of Honour’ award to surgeon C. Palanivelu for his contribution in the field of medicine and surgery, and the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ to social worker Mano Bakthavatsalam at a function here on Friday. The Rotary Vocational Excellence Award was given to A. Velumani, Chairman and Managing Director of Thyrocare Technologies Ltd. The citation said Dr. Palanivelu, Managing Trustee of GEM Hospital and Research Institute, has made important contributions to the field of gastroenterology and Minimum Access Surgery. Rotarian C. Muthusamy highlighted the 58 years of social service of Ms.Bakthavatsalam in the field of women’s empowerment through education. N. Murali, Managing Director of The Hindu, who presented the awards, appreciated the Rotary’s efforts to recognise trailblazers from fields as diverse as medicine to social work. He praised the award recipients for their service motivation and journey from humble beginnings to great achievements.
