Staff Reporter

Rs. 10.5 crore allotted for infrastructure works

‘Major projects in the pipeline despite economic slowdown’

PALAKKAD: Industries Minister Elamaram Karim has said that textile units will be allotted space by the year-end at the Integrated Textile Park coming up inside the Kinfra Park at Kanjikode.

He told presspersons here on Saturday that some leading textile companies had shown interest in starting units. Roads inside the park were ready. Work on a water supply scheme and the common effluent treatment plant was on. Once this was completed, space would be allotted.

The Minister said that of the Rs.10.5 crore allotted for such infrastructure works, Rs.6.5 crore was spent.

Railway coach factory

Asked about the proposed railway coach factory at Kanjikode, the Minister said Union Railway Minister Lalu Prasad had promised to lay the foundations in February. The Chief Minister was pursuing the matter with the Union government. The State government had been going ahead with land acquisition. The factory was expected to help the development of Palakkad and other places in the State.

On the worldwide slowdown, he said though the State had been affected, at least five major projects were in the pipeline, such as the high-tech city by a Malaysian company in Kozhikode and the Shobha city in Kochi.

Face-to-face

The Minister later inaugurated a face-to-face programme to solve the problems faced by small and medium enterprises. Decisions were taken in 77 cases and replies are being prepared in 51. In 43 cases, the government will have to take policy decisions.

V.K.C. Mohammed Koya, president, Small Scale Industries Association, presided over the meeting.

T. Balakrishnan, Principal Secretary, Industries; K.S. Sreenivas, Additional Secretary; T.O. Sooraj, Industries Director; and District Collector M.C. Mohandas were present.
