Rainwater harvesting need of the hour: Sheila

NEW DELHI: Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Saturday urged people to adopt rainwater harvesting systems to check depletion of the Capital’s underground water level.

Inaugurating a new rainwater harvesting system in Milan Vihar Cooperative Group Housing Society at Patparganj, she said this was the first big rainwater harvesting project in East Delhi. The Delhi Jal Board, she said, had been providing a substantial grant for implementation of such schemes. The new system at Milan Vihar, installed in association with the Central Ground Water Board, Bhagidari Cell (Chief Minister’s Office), Delhi Jal Board and a company under public-private partnership, would be able to recharge 82 lakh litres of rainwater per year.

Describing it as an important project, the Chief Minister said other housing societies would do well to follow the model. With the commissioning of more such projects in East Delhi, she said, not only would the water level improve, it would also help in improvement of the ecological balance.The Delhi Government, it was mentioned, was concentrating right now on development of East Delhi in a big way as the Commonwealth Games Village is coming up here.
