THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The government is planning to establish care homes in all districts to rehabilitate patients discharged from mental health centres, Minister for Health and Social Welfare P.K. Sreemathy has said. Addressing a high-level meeting convened at the Mental Health Centre here on Saturday, Ms. Sreemathy said two such care homes, one each for men and women, would be set up in Thiruvananthapuram as a pilot project. She said the care homes would utilise the services of social workers selected by the Social Welfare Department and the district panchayat. Ms. Sreemathy said the care home for men would be opened at Nellanad, while the one for women would start functioning from a building being constructed by Abhaya with assistance from the government. High Court judge Thottathil B. Radhakrishnan stressed the need for coordinated action by departments to make the project a success. The meeting decided to open the care home at Nellanad by the month of May.
