Staff Reporter

PUDUKOTTAI: Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government at the Centre has been successfully implementing poverty-alleviation programmes across the country with the help of banks, said Union Minister of Home P. Chidambaram.

Commitment

Speaking after inaugurating the branch of Bank of India at Thirumayam, about 20 km from here, on Saturday, Mr. Chidambaram said that the starting of a branch at the village by one of the three leading banks in the country, testified to the Centre’s commitment to strive for the economic uplift of rural masses.

Plea to bank officials

“Bank of India, with an anticipated profitability of Rs.3,000 crore during the current financial year, has been rated the second major bank in the country,” he said, appealing to the bank officials to help the economic development of Tirumayam.

Chairman and Managing Director T. S. Narayanasami, in his presidential address, said that this was the bank’s 2,978th branch.

Computerisation

All branches have been computerised while as many as 2,301 branches had been brought under the core banking solution network.

As part of its corporate social responsibility, the Bank had adopted several villages for their overall development. All families in these adopted villages had been brought under ‘financial inclusion scheme’ he added.

Union Minister of State for Environment and Forests S. Regupathy, Tirumayam MLA R.M. Subburam, District Revenue Officer R. Mahendravel and Coimbatore Zonal Manager P.V. Krishna Murthy were among those present.
