Congress, Trinamool to fight polls together

Special Correspondent

KOLKATA: The Trinamool Congress and the Congress — the two major Opposition parties in West Bengal — have decided to fight the Left Front together in the coming Lok Sabha elections.

Details of the tie-up will be finalised later.

This was agreed on at a late night meeting on Sunday between External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee. K. Keshava Rao, AICC general secretary in charge of West Bengal, was also present.

Earlier in the day, Congress leaders deliberated on the tie-up with the Trinamool, Ms. Banerjee had said that her party “is open for talks” but “it is for the Congress to decide.”

On the question of whether the Congress was in a position to accept a fewer number of seats to accommodate the demands of the Trinamool, Mr. Rao said more important than the number was “the quality.”
