Thanjavur: Bharathidasan University Vice-Chancellor M.Ponnavaikko has called for conversion of the country’s huge population into a potential human resource to improve the global ranking of the country with respect to overall development.
Delivering the convocation address of the Ponnaiyah Ramajayam Group of Educational Institutions (Ponnaiyah Ramajayam College and Ponnaiyah Ramajayam Engineering College) here on Sunday, Ponnavaikko said India ranked 128th among 177 countries in overall development.
At the same time, it ranked twelfth among 177 countries with respect to gross domestic product, fourth with respect to purchasing power and second only to China in human resource. In overall development, it needed improvement.
“India is not a poor country. It is a rich country with poor people. The impediment in overall development is also that a large number of people are below the poverty line. China, which has the largest population of 132 crore in the world has implemented population control measures. Now, it is repenting. Population is a strength when converted into human resource.”
He appealed to the graduates to gain knowledge about this country and its environment. “The knowledge given in colleges is only a tool. Students should know how to use the tool.” The Vice-Chancellor distributed degrees to 553 students belonging to Ponnaiyah Ramajayam College and 234 students belonging to Ponnaiah Ramajayam Engineering College. While there were 23 rank holders in PR college, there were four rank holders in PR Engineering College. One student of PR College received gold medal and two others silver medals.
Chancellor P. Murugesan and Vice-Chancellor Mohan participated.
