Letters to the Editor
I was surprised and, in fact, pained by the two editorials that appeared in The Hindu on the High Court incident and the readers’ response. The clear message is that the police were provoked and that is why they indulged in violence. It was conveniently forgotten that judges were also attacked. If initial provocation by one group is sufficient for another to indulge in mindless violence, one can very well justify the killing of Muslims in Gujarat after the Godhra incident. I was present in the court on February 19. Those who were not cannot realise the impact of the terror let loose by the police that day. As a result, the majesty of the judiciary became a casualty. I am confident that the truth will come out when the planned, brutal and mindless violence let loose by the police on the lawyers is exposed. K. Rajasekaran, Chennai
